Tony Docal Luncheon
Tony Docal, CEISMC Program Manager at Georgia Tech, Speaks at March LuncheonOur guest speaker at the Chapter March luncheon was Tony Docal, director of the Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics, and Computing at Georgia Tech. As Program Director, Tony runs the Summerscape program camps for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. These camps include classes, practical exercises, and a dorm sleep-overs on the Georgia Tech campus. Tech has long sought to have more minority and underprivileged kids attend along with those from the more wealthy neighborhoods of Atlanta. In addition to education, the program's goals are to 1) increase the content knowledge of the participants, 2) improve the academic readiness of the participants, and 3) increase the interest and self confidence of the participants. Tony gave a slide-show presentation on the Summerscape program, with many photos of the kids showing the hands-on experience that they get as part of the program. We suggest going directly to the Center's web site at the following link to learn more: For almost eight years now, the Army-Navy Golf Classic has raised funds (over $10,000 so far) that are directed at paying the Summerscape tuition (roughly $450 per child) for such less-fortunate kids. Our goal has been to provide some youngsters, who would not otherwise have the opportunity, to mingle with other kids their age in an challenging academic and fun envrionment in the hope that they would see academics and good grades in a more favorable light, would then work harder in school, and perhaps go on to college. In the long run, we hope these kids will, indeed, go to college and, perhaps, one of the service academies. In any case, we believe that the program will make them better citizens. The 10th annual version of the classic will be held at Fort McPherson's “The Golfers Club” on Monday, May 22.
