10th Annual Army-Navy Golf Classic
After Seven Straight Victories, Navy Takes a Loss at the 10th Annual Army-Navy Golf ClassicPress Release by event coordinator Will Wood '66Atlanta, GA (AP) On May 22, 2006, Members of the Naval Academy Alumni Association of Atlanta (Navy) valiantly battled the Whoops only to suffer Navys second loss in ten such outings against the West Point Society of Atlanta (Army) in the tenth annual Army-Navy Golf Classic, an annual spring competition that was begun in 1997. As before, the golf competition and awards dinner that followed took place at the Golfers Club at Fort McPherson. Over $4,100 was raised to provide tuition for needy youngsters in the Atlanta area to attend the SummerScape math, science, and computer camp at Georgia Tech this summer. Despite another batch of injuries to Navy regulars, the event enjoyed record participation with some 93 golfers taking part in the contest. Using the modified Stableford scoring system, the final score was Army at +149 to Navys + 137. Some 21 of Armys points came from one individual with a 30 handicap who produced some 21 points, nine more than any other golfer in the event (this gentlemans handicap will be closely scrutinized next year by the handicap committee). Once again, with the number of new folks participating this year and our regulars back next year, we hope to have a really tremendous event next year with record attendance as well as record support for our charity. Despite the defeat, everyone enjoyed the golf and camaraderie as well as a very fine dinner with prizes. Prizes this year included engraved cocktail glasses, many golf shirts, other golf paraphernalia, tickets to a Braves game, a $160 dinner, and more. Participating in the 2006 Army-Navy Golf Classic were the following: Jim Ravenel 45; Bill Wright 50; Johns Jaudon 55; Jack Clay 56 and guest Mike Struck; Bill Callaway 60 and guest Carter Moss; Larry Harton 60; Carl McCallum 60 and guest Peter Barber; Joe Peek 60 and guests Kevin Peek, Sean Peek, and Jerome Bourdreax; Hal Morrison 61; Paul Hurst 62; Marc Calhoun 64; Stewart Caldwell 65; Mike Donohoo 65; Paul Thorsen 65; Joe Frazar 65; John Johnson 65; Jack Johnston 65; Larry Bergen 66 and guest Lee Foley; Will Wood 66 and guest Gary Williams; Reb Hester 67 and wife Lynda and guests Ray and Becky Bordelon; Steve Dmetruk 71; Tom Galloway 71; Richard Richardson 71 and son Sean; Mitch Rowland 71; Mike Stephens 71; Lee Whitfield 71 and guest Joe Gardner; Win Rorabaugh 70; Steve Frederick 72; Jeff Johnstone 80 and guest Richard Batelaan; Doug Hintze 83; Brad Jones 83; Bayly Taft 84; Greg Reppar 90; and Karlton Holston 02. Navy again brought more players to the field of honor than Army (47 for Navy to 46 for Army). Many Navy folks took home some super raffle prizes. Navy also took all three special prizes with Becky Bordelon, guest of Reb Hester 67, winning a $30 gift certificate for longest drive while similar prizes for closest to the pin were won by Bill Wright 50 and Joe Gardner, guest of Lee Whitfield 71. In the Stableford competition, and winning increasingly bigger gift certificates, were John Johson 65 in 5th place, Mike Stephens 71 in 4th, Jeff Johnstone 80 in 3rd, and Larry Bergen 66 in 2nd. Doug Hintze 83 took first place and won a nice gift certificate as well as the traditional set of engraved cocktail glasses. Paul Ohme, CEISMC and SummerScape Director at Georgia Tech, presented the traveling trophy to Dan Baker and Ali Gelineau of the West Point Society. These folks, on behalf of the winning team, asked all of the Army and Navy competitors to go out and talk about the event and get more classmates and other academy alums to participate in next years event such that the 11th annual version of the classic sets records in every category. We look forward to the 11th renewal of the classic in May 2007 and invite all golfing USNAAAA members in the Atlanta area to join us for the competition and camaraderie. Its always a fun time for all.
