Bill Rentz '55, USNAAA Atlanta Chapter President

This time of the year when the media coverage of the Party Presidential Nominating Conventions fills our senses with speeches, oratory, and other dramatics, whether you believe it or agree with it or not, you have to be keenly aware of the open society and system we live under.  Can you imagine criticism directed toward a head of state by any candidate from the “loyal” opposition the likes of which we hear, in any other country in the world, which claims to be law abiding and stable, that would not foment a revolution? Our union will survive it all and be stronger as an outcome. Although it isn’t perfect, it is the most open in the world, and it highlights and emphasizes the freedom and liberty under which we in America live.

My father was a college History professor and coach (when he wasn’t being a Naval Aviator), and my mother was a journalist and college journalism professor.  They met in 1921 while both worked on the Macon Telegraph newspaper.  He wrote Sports and she wrote for the Society pages. They both taught me to listen to politicians with a cocked ear, ask questions, and determine the truth for myself.  It’s a good thing in this day and time.  But the most important thing any of us must do is get out and vote – in the primaries and general elections.

Speaking of elections, your newly elected Chapter Officers and Board of Directors are working diligently on 2004/2005 Social Events and monthly luncheon speakers.  We are trying to represent your interests and provide activities that will interest you and encourage you to bring along your old classmates, shipmates, and squadron mates to join our fun and camaraderie.  Take a look at our web site and open the Events Calendar. After marveling at the magnificent job that our webmaster Bob Schultz does, think about your ideas on how to improve the events and make them more appealing to potential future members. Call any member of the Board and let us know your thoughts.
