CAPT Stephen B. Latta, USN, U. S. Naval Academy Director of Admissions, Speaks at Chapter November 2003 Luncheon

Captain Latta spoke to a packed house at the Chapter November luncheon at Jock’s & Jill’s on Novebmer 21st.  His presentation contained some very interesting statistics about the incoming classes of Midshipmen over the past few years.

Total applications for the Class of 2007 were 14,101.  This represents the highest number of applicants in the last 13 years, and includes 3,004 female applicants and 2,674 minority applicants.

There were a total of 12,331 applicants for the Class of 2006.  The average number of applicants for the Classes of 2003 through 2006 was 11,083.

The average SAT scores for the incoming classes were:

(Figures in parenthesis represent female applicants).  Captain Latta mentioned that if an applicant has even one or two “Cs” in any high school class, he or she is probably not going to make the cut.

80% of applicants stood in the top fifth of their high school class.  89% were involved in varsity athletics.  56% were National Honor Society members.

The following information compares two other service academies Classes of 2007.

Captain Latta next discussed the success of the Summer Seminar Program.  The seminar consists of a series of three one-week stays at the Academy for prospective candidates.  Each candidate rooms with a Midshipman for a week and participates in classes and all other normal activities with their assigned Mid.  This year 1840 students attended the program.  Almost all of them applied for entry and approximately 1/3 of them were admitted.  The program costs $300.00, which must be paid by the candidate.

Captain Latta also took time to explain the inner workings of the Blue and Gold organization.  Chapter member Cindy Miller, the area Blue & Gold Coordinator was present along with several of the B&G Officers in her organization.  Thanks to Cindy and her team for their continuing efforts for USNA.

A couple of interesting statistics were provided in closing:  The cost of a four-year education at USNA is now $276,000.00.  At the 20 years of service mark, 50% of all Navy and Marine Corps officers still on active duty are USNA graduates.

Many thanks to Captain Latta for making time in his busy schedule to visit our Chapter and update us on the makeup of the latest incoming classes.
