May 2002 President's Corner
Bob Schultz '71, USNAAA Atlanta Chapter PresidentHappy belated “Tax Freedom Day!” Tax freedom day this year was on April 27th. Tax freedom day is the first day of the calendar year that you would actually get to keep any money from your income if you had to pay all of your taxes for the entire year first (federal, state, local, sales, etc.). But, don’t feel bad, in 2000 the date actually crept into May! So, we’re moving in the right direction. (For more info, crank up your web browser and go to www.taxfoundation.org/taxfreedomday.html). OK, now that I think of it, I’m sorry I brought that up! On to the happier topic of Chapter business and events. The Navy-Army joint evening out at Dante’s Down the Hatch was held on April 18th with little fanfare and a small crowd. In my humble opinion, the tactics of the event were lacking in a few areas. I think that most alumni spoke with their wallets (the pricing was not right) and decided not to attend. The idea for the event grew from the realization that many area alumni cannot join us at the Chapter monthly luncheons due to time constraints during the middle of a work day. We hoped that an early evening event would draw some of those folks out of the woodwork. We still think that informal evening events may be the answer to getting more people together. Any and all ideas on venue, pricing, etc. for another attempt are welcomed. By the time you get his newsletter, it should only be a few days until Navy beats Army for the fourth year in a row at the sixth annual Army-Navy Golf Classic on May 13th at Fort McPherson. Navy has won the golf tournament four out of the last five times, including the last three years in a row! If you’ve signed up to play this year, make sure to mark this date on your calendar and show up ready to compete. With Summer approaching, the 28th Annual LobsterFest is coming up fast! This year the LobsterFest will be held on Saturday, June 8th, at the City of Atlanta Waterworks Recreation Facility where it has been held many times before. Look elsewhere in this month’s newsletter for more information and a reservation form to fill out and mail in. As usual, dues-paying Chapter members get a price break on this event. So, if you haven’t sent in your 2002 Chapter dues yet, the LobsterFest is a good reminder and great incentive to do so. Also, please remember that the LobsterFest is a large undertaking that requires a huge amount of work to carry out. We need volunteers to help with setup, check in, food preparation, cooking, serving, clean up, supply pick up and delivery, and more. If you can help in any capacity, please contact Carl McCallum ’60 at his home phone, 770-973-1096. The new Atlanta Chapter Membership and Georgia Alumni Rosters were mailed on Saturday, April 20th. If you paid Chapter dues in 2001, you rate your very own copy of the latest Roster as a benefit of membership. Watch for it in your snail-mail! Then look up your classmates and invite them to an event or a luncheon. God bless America. God bless our troops deployed in the Middle East And… BEAT ARMY Bob Schultz ‘71
