Navy 58 - Army 12 !!!

Just over 70 Naval Academy Alumni and friends gathered at TJ's Sports Bar  & Grill in Roswell on December 7th, 2002 to out-shout the attending West Pointers and watch Navy win the 103rd meeting of Navy and Army on the gridiron.

The final score of Navy 58 - Army 12, represents the most total points scored in the history of the game, assuring this Navy team a place in the history books!  With this win Navy has won three out of the last four games!  The series now stands at Army 49, Navy 47, Ties 7.  Navy leads the series in total touchdowns and total yardage.  Soon we'll lead the series as well!

This year's game was held in Giant Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ.  The Mids, lead by quarterback Craig Candeto, played an absolutely solid running game all day long.  Army, it seemed, had no defense against the quarterback option run plays.  For nearly every Navy possession in the entire first half, we executed running play after running play and simply marched down the field with military precision.  If you look up the verse "Sail Navy down the field and sink the Army, sink the Army gray!" in your Reef Points, you'll find a picture of this football game there!

Navy quarterback Craig Candeto called quarterback option run plays or quarterback sneaks to take the ball into the end zone for touchdown a total of SIX times, including one option run for 42 yards and a TD!

In the third quarter, the Army center stepped on his quarterback's foot causing him to trip and fall into his own end zone for a safety!  Two more points for Navy!  Navy immediately followed that with a 53-yard punt return, followed shortly thereafter by a 23-yard TD pass by quarterback Candeto to Navy receiver Tony Lane.  Navy added another touchdown in the fourth quarter with an eleven-yard TD run by Navy running back Bryce McDonald.

Our first string players held Army to total scoring of only two field goals for the entire game!  Only after our second and third string players were in the game was Army able to get their single touchdown of the game with a 36-yard pass in the fourth quarter.  But then they missed the extra point!

Thanks to Chapter Treasurer Nick Ward '74 for working check-in and to everyone else who helped make Saturday, December 7th another memorable day for Navy football.

Let's say it again, with feeling...

GO NAVY ! - BEAT ARMY !
