Navy 30 - Army 28The Brigade of Midshipman on the field in PSI Net
Stadium, Baltimore. About 80 Naval Academy Alumni and friends gathered at TJ's Sports Bar & Grill in Roswell on December 2nd, 2000 to watch Navy win the 101st meeting of Navy and Army on the football field. Our return to TJ’s for the annual Army-Navy game meant good food and good times, not to mention another NAVY WIN!! The management and staff at TJ’s, especially Mark, Alex and Tim, went all out to ensure a great day for all attendees. The buffet was delicious and the service excellent. Mike and Helena Herger did a great job manning the reception table for the Navy, and Mike also lead us in singing our alma mater after our victory. Jim Ravenel sold more USNA tumblers to help add green to the Navy Blue and Gold. Thanks to everyone who participated and worked to helped make Saturday, December 2 another memorable day. The Navy Firstclassmen will graduate having won three of their last four meetings with Army, making them the first class to do so since the class of 1986! This also gives Navy two straight wins against Army for the first time since 1982-83! The series now stands at Army 48, Navy 46, Ties 7, though Navy leads the series in total touchdowns and total yardage. The Mids, lead by quarterback Brian Broadwater, played a terrific first half and took a 20 to 7 lead into the locker room. Broadwater ran for over 120 yards himself, including a 45 yard run for a touchdown, and a pass for a touchdown. Navy went ahead by a score of 27 to 7 near the end of the third quarter when the Army offense offered up a fumble on their own three yard line and Midshipman Brad Wimsatt picked it up and fell forward into the end zone for a score. Nothing less than a "poor showing" in the second half with a blocked punt, a lost fumble, and poor defense that gave Army a pass for a TD, ate away at the Navy lead until it was 27 to 21 Navy. After recovering a fumbled punt return, a Navy field goal attempt (with every Navy fan too nervous to even watch given the performance of our kicker) was successful giving the Mids a 30 to 21 lead. However, it wasn't long before Army scored again making it 30 to 28. Navy moved down the field again trying to run out the clock, but couldn't convert a third down attempt for a first down. The fourth down field goal attempt was a line drive that barely cleared the defense and Army should have gotten the ball back on downs. But no! Army ran into the kicker on the field goal attempt, giving Navy the ball and a first down. After that, all quarterback Brian Broadwater had to do was take a few snaps and put a knee down to run out the clock and give Navy the victory!
